The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
