Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
