Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
