Agencies in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with certain experts worried it could be an algal bloom.
The rosy-colored ooze was found on a portion of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been documented on areas of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Samples have been taken and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A official commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in minerals, warmth, rain or light".
"These blooms are at times called reddish tides because the outbreaks can turn the water crimson," the official added. "Not all algae outbreaks are toxic, with many species acting as a key source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The usual source of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their frequency has increased in recent years, partially due to environmental shifts and pollution that combine to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically act as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that disturbs the normal functioning of marine environments.
These phenomena have been compared to subsurface wildfires and can continue to grow as long as circumstances are favorable. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as aquatic animals is killed or smothered, supplying more minerals for the proliferation.

"It's common to observe a bloom of this algae after a bloom of a different species, or something like a fish reproduction," she noted.
A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it seemed the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and indicated the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, referring to comparable events overseas.
"So the state needs to issue a strong warning here, the government and the EPA need to respond to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've gathered and we need to put word out the community here," she emphasized.
Henley expressed she had concerns for community health after feeling a numbness along her limbs and skin while being splashed with tainted seawater.
An environmental foundation has stated deceased sea creatures and expired organisms washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist calling the situation as an "natural disaster" and demanding the government head to see and "lead the response that officials must be doing".
