Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding former President Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.
One account, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
Yet the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
Several of other platform users also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to politics.
The industry were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
