2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
The news echoes a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full content from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a clearer identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. After some time of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having spent the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
The President
Brinkman presently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that shift every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
The game does not have an official launch window or platforms, but players can expect more updates as development advances.
